Dosage Forms Available

• Ispaghula + Lactulose is available in the form of a powder, which is intended for oral consumption.
• This medication is mixed with water or juice to create a solution that is consumed orally.

Age and Dose Restrictions

• Ispaghula + Lactulose is intended for adult use. It should be given to children above 6 years if prescribed by a doctor.

Contraindications

• Patients with known hypersensitivity to either Ispaghula or Lactulose should not take this combination.
• It is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction, stenosis, galactosaemia, fructose intolerance, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Other Medications to Avoid

• This combination may interact with medications such as cardiac glycosides (like digoxin), lithium, and antiepileptics (like carbamazepine), which could interfere with the absorption of these medications.
• It may also influence the effect of insulin or oral hypoglycaemics, requiring close monitoring of blood glucose levels.
• There could be an increased risk of hypokalaemia when used in conjunction with thiazide diuretics (like hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) and chlorthalidone).

Overdose and Missed Dose

• An overdose of Ispaghula + Lactulose may cause diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting. If you suspect an overdose, please consult your doctor immediately.
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as per the regular schedule. Do not double up the dose to make up for the missed one.

Management of Side Effects

Most side effects of Ispaghula + Lactulose are temporary and generally harmless, resolving when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

• To manage abdominal bloating and distension, try to take the medication with plenty of water.
• For flatulence or gas, avoid foods that may cause gas and try walking after meals.
• If you experience abdominal cramps or pain, a warm compress can provide temporary relief.

Use in Driving and Operating Machinery

• Ispaghula + Lactulose does not generally affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience side effects such as dizziness or fatigue, avoid these activities.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

• The safety of Ispaghula + Lactulose during pregnancy and lactation has not been well studied. It is recommended to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Caution in Other Conditions

• Patients with diabetes should exercise caution when taking Ispaghula + Lactulose as it may affect the absorption of sugars.
• Patients with swallowing difficulties or impaired gag reflex should also exercise caution due to the risk of choking posed by the expanded bulk of ispaghula husk.

• A diet high in fibre can help manage constipation. Include foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in your diet.
• Regular physical activity can stimulate bowel movement and help in managing constipation.
• Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day.
• Try to establish a regular bowel habit. Going to the toilet at the same time each day can help train your body to have regular bowel movements.
