Managing the Side effects
- Abdominal pain: Sip a cup of chamomile tea or peppermint tea. Take a warm bath or use a heating pad on your abdomen. It helps to relieve abdominal pain.
- Nausea and vomiting: Have ginger tea or chew on raw ginger. Ginger is a natural remedy for nausea and vomiting.
- Dizziness: Taking deep breaths to regulate blood flow and oxygen levels can alleviate dizziness.
- Paresthesia: It is a tingling or numbness sensation in the hands and feet. Massaging the affected area, stretching, and taking a warm bath may help relieve paresthesia.
- Tinnitus: Tinnitus is a ringing or buzzing in the ears. To help manage tinnitus, you may try using a white noise machine, practising relaxation techniques, or avoiding loud noises.
- Taste alteration: Drink plenty of water, chew mints or chew gum to freshen your mouth. Add spices or herbs to your food to enhance the taste.
- Increased urination: Avoid caffeine, alcohol and other foods such as spicy foods, citrus fruits, and carbonated beverages that can irritate the bladder and cause increased urination.
Precautions
PREGNANCY
Diamox tablets are unsafe during pregnancy due to the risk of miscarriage, preterm labour or stillbirth. Acetazolamide is a Category C drug and should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks to the unborn baby.
BREASTFEEDING
It is safe for breastfeeding mothers to take Diamox tablets. Before taking a Diamox tablet, breastfeeding mothers are advised to consult with their doctors.
ALCOHOL
Alcohol is not known to interact with Diamox tablets. However, alcohol consumption can increase the risk of side effects associated with Diamox tablets, such as dizziness or drowsiness. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking Diamox tablets.
LIVER
It is recommended that people with the liver disease take precautions while using Diamox tablets. There is a possibility of adjusting the dosage of the Diamox tablets. Please talk to your doctor; however, it is not recommended for patients with severe liver disorders to take Diamox tablets.
KIDNEY
It is recommended that people with kidney disease should take precautions while using Diamox tablets. There is a possibility that the dosage of the Diamox tablets must be adjusted. USING MACHINES AND DRIVING
If you experience sleepiness after taking Diamox tablets, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery. We recommend that you consult a doctor as soon as possible.
ALLERGY
Do not take a Diamox tablet if you are allergic to acetazolamide (the active ingredient in Diamox). An allergic reaction to Diamox tablets can cause symptoms such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or severe dizziness.
USE IN CHILDREN
There's no evidence for the use of Diamox tablets in Children. It is better to consult a doctor before giving Diamox tablets to your child.
USE IN OLDER PATIENTS
Older patients with heart, kidney and liver problems should cautiously use Diamox tablets. Moreover, older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of Diamox tablets. Older patients may also be taking other medications or supplements that can interact with Diamox tablets, so check with a doctor before taking the tablets.
