Storvas is used to lower lipids like cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Lipid-regulating medicines are popularly called statins. Statins are prescribed by a doctor when lifestyle changes and a low-fat diet are insufficient to maintain the correct cholesterol levels. The key constituent of Storvas is atorvastatin.
Storvas is also used in reducing the risk of heart attack and the probability of performing surgeries for heart patients. It belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. The HMG-CoA inhibitors or statins reduce the levels of low-density lipoproteins(LDLs) and triglycerides and increase the levels of high-density lipoproteins(HDLs).
Apart from the anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties of atorvastatin, it is also an effective antioxidant. Another use is to reduce the cholesterol and other fatty substances in the blood in children aged between ten to seventeen years, who have a disease called familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia (a condition characterised where cholesterol can not be removed from the body quickly).
